Any pet owner wants to make sure their pet is eating healthy with their current pet food. The problem is that, just because it is packaged for your pet's consumption doesn't always mean it is fit for your pet to consume. There are certain things to look for to know you're buying healthy pet food.
You wouldn't let your kids eat junk food all day, so your pet shouldn't either. The tricky part is with pets, the packaging won't scream out what is healthy pet food and what is just plain pet food. As a responsible pet owner, you'll just have to dig a bit deeper.
It is important to know how to read labels and ingredients to make sure you're purchasing healthy pet food. The protein source for higher quality dog food should be meat and should be listed as a whole food like chicken or beef. The first two ingredients listed should be meat and the next two ingredients should be vegetables and grain sources. Also know that corn is a cheap "filler" in pet food and not a good nutrition source for dogs. And try to avoid meat by-products, which may be hard to do. If you do buy a product with by-products, make sure it is source specific, like chicken, beef or turkey.
The pet food industry isn't as closely regulated as it should be. And unfortunately the main goal isn't always providing your pet with healthy pet food, so take some time to research pet food and soon your tough decision between all that flashy pet food packaging won't be so difficult.
